While there may be fads and trick diets that offer quick ways to lose weight, that may be the wrong way to look at the problem. There are foods that we can eat that help us lose weight. These foods also give our bodies the resources it needs as in fibre, vitamins and minerals.

Starvation diets do not work and can actually harm your body. You may lose weight initially but you will gain back the lost weight. You did not gain all the extra weight in a few days, it often took years before you even noticed that you had got fat and over weight. So to lose weight it is best to do it gradually.

Some foods are better for you than other food groups.

Fruits and vegetables are low in calories and our bodies are able to use the natural sugars and nutrients in more efficient ways than other junk food alternatives.

Fibre helps cleanse your system as well as helping to keep the weight off.

Protein foods boost your metabolism which makes you feel energized. More energy allows you to be more active which burns more calories.

Green tea helps to stimulate the body to burn calories and work away at body fat. Green tea also is great for your immune system which helps keep the body balanced.

Drinking enough water every day helps the body be in balance. A balanced body tends to facilitate weight equilibrium.

The more active you are the less food you tend to eat because your body feels balanced. The more balanced your body is the less liklihood you will have to lose weight.

These are just a few tips on how to lose weight.

Lose Weight with Water

You may have heard the saying that "water is the staff of life". It seems an obvious statement on one hand, as we know only too well that dehydration can be potentially fatal, especially if we find ourselves in the desert. However, despite being an obvious statement very few people actually drink pure water on a regular basis, and those who do don't drink enough of it.

Have you also heard it said that you need to drink lots of water to lose weight? This may sound like another of those fad diets that sounds too good to be true. But the truth of the matter is you do need to drink lots of water if you want to lose weight effectively and healthily.

So how much water should you drink?

Dr F Batmanghelidj, in his book "Your Body's Many Cries for Water" tells us that an adult should drink about half their body weight of water in ounces daily. By water, he means water, not coffee, tea or any other beverage, and certainly not diet coke. It is also important to remember that if exercise is part of your program, more water is necessary to replace water loss from sweat. It is crucial to drink water before, during and after exercise to keep energy levels high and aid in recovery.

Here are a few tips to add to your lose weight diet plan, as to why we need to drink more water to improve our weight loss:

* Water helps suppress your appetite: How many times have you felt hungry and grabbed a snack? Your body often confuses the desire to eat with the need for water. You might not be hungry you might just be dehydrated. Some people only drink water when they feel thirsty. If you wait until thirst sets in, you are probably already dehydrated. So if you are serious about wanting to lose weight - drink more water.

* Water flushes toxins from your body: Drinking water helps to detoxify the liver and kidneys and carries waste away from the body.

* Water prevents fluid retention and so aids your ability to lose weight, particularly at the start of your diet: If you do not drink enough water then the body will go into dehydration mode and hang on to the water it has. If you make sure you are drinking enough water the body will start recognize it has a continuous supply and will stop hanging onto every drop. A diet that is high in sodium will also cause water retention. Keep your sodium to an acceptable level and then drink more water to help flush the excess sodium through your kidneys.

* If you keep your body optimally hydrated you will find that it enhances your physical performance, helps digestion, helps you to lose weight, maintains the balance of electrolytes and transports nutrients.

* During a regime to lose weight it is essential that you exercise to build lean muscle. Keeping your body well hydrated is a very important factor. Water helps muscle tone allowing the muscles to contract. Water also helps lubricate the joints.

With such amazing information available to us we would be foolish to ignore it, especially if we want to lose weight fast.

Lose Weight with a Buddy

Having a buddy to assist you in a program to lose weight is a wonderful idesa. We ladies have buddies for all types of ventures, so why not have one for the toughest venture we can usually undertake, losing those God awful extra pounds that seem to creep up on us so easily.

I wanted to lose weight a few years ago, as I had won an award, and I knew that meant going up on stage, in front of thousands of people, so ten lbs. had to go, and they had to go quickly. I wasn't as educated in the art of losing weight as I am now, so I had to ponder for a few days on how I was going to accomplish this feat. Then, the bright idea of joining a gym popped in my head. I called my very best friend and gave her the rundown on why this was all so necessary, and just like all good friends will do, she agreed to help me and be my morale support. She already looked like Jane Fonda, and was genetically gifted with a 120 lb physique. Don't you just want to sit on those people and force-feed them chocolate chip cookies? She may have been thin, but she was my friend ,and I knew she would not let me fall away until I had reached my goal of losing this weight.

I had seen the commercials about all these people going to the gym after work, and they all looked so happy running on their treadmills, and I could just see myself doing the same thing. The very next morning I started my quest to lose weight and tone my body, and I could just see myself looking just like Jane Fonda. I drove by and got ole' Col, she's my buddy, and we stopped at Wal-Mart on the way to the gym and bought me some of those little droopy socks, and a purple leotard. She already had some. Something told me ole' Col had some experience here.

Arriving at the gym about 10 AM, I figured it would be fairly empty. That place was loaded with all kinds of women, most of them already looking like Jane Fonda. I was quite impressed. This gym thing seemed to be working for them. They were almost all toned and beautiful, and not one looked as if they needed to lose weight at all. Col fit right in, but after putting on my purple leotard, it was obvious I was going to require quite a bit of work if I was going to even get close to Jane Fonda.

We were greeted by a male Adonis, who very professionally gave us instructions on our exercise regime, and then led us into this very large room with mirrors on every wall. The last thing I want to do is look at my self glisten as I huff and puff through this exercise work-out. I don't know about you, but I do not enjoy watching myself glisten. That is just my way of saying "sweating like some old pig", and it is not that enjoyable to me, but I had made a promise and Col was looking at me with that look of, " I'm gonna kill you if you walk out of here." She knows me. I knew this buddy thing was going to come in handy. There was no way she was going to let me quit. She was going to make sure I would lose this weight.

Now here is the scenario. I am in a 4 sided mirrored room with about 30 really nice looking women who are toned, muscled, and not one of them needs to lose weight and I don't think I need to inform you of who is the only one here who doesn't look like Jane Fonda. They look like gazelles, I don't. My buddy, Col is just exercising away, right in time with the booming music, and she hasn't even started to glisten. After about 5 minutes of this torture, I did what I promised myself I wasn't going to do. I looked in the mirror. What I saw made me just stop and stare. My buddy, Col, stopped and just looked at me. It took her a few seconds for her to read my mind, but she got it, and she started to laugh. I started to laugh, and we both just stood there laughing at the big, purple, round grape in the mirror. If you are round and need to lose weight, purple is not a good color for a leotard. I was the grape in a room of gazelles.

This incident is the very reason you need a buddy if you want to lose weight. Col took me by the hand and led me out of the mirrored room. We laughed about the grape thing, she gave me a hug, but she never let me quit until those 10lbs. were gone. Always lose weight with a buddy. You will need the hugs and a few laughs along the way.

Trying to lose weight is difficult for many people. They either do not want to stop eating or they do not want to exercise. The best way to lose weight is still a combination of exercise and diet but not necessarily. A lot depends on your body composition.

New research published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism reveals that dieting alone is equally effective at reducing weigh and fat as a combination of diet and exercise—as long as the calories consumed and burned equal out. The research also indicates that the addition of exercise to a weight-loss regimen does not change body composition and abdominal fat distribution, debunking the idea that specific exercises can reduce fat in targeted areas (e.g., exercise to reduce fat around a person's midsection).

"It's all about the calories," said Dr. Eric Ravussin of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La., and senior author of the study. "So long as the energy deficit is the same, body weight, fat weight, and abdominal fat will all decrease in the same way."

We are genetically programmed for storing fat in a particular pattern — and that this programming can't be easily overcome. So if you are genetically predisposed to store fat in the hips all the exercises that are designed to reduce your hip size may not work if you are calorie neutral. You have to be calorie negative, that is you burn more than you consume.

Obesity has now reached epidemic proportions and it is very worrying to see that there are more and more children being diagnosed as obese. There has never been a time when there has been so much information available and so much in the way of education, weight loss clubs, new dietary regimes, television programs, advise on healthy eating to name but a few. But still the epidemic goes on and there seem to be insufficient inroads being made to reduce the number of obese and overweight people. Very few are able to lose weight and successfully maintain their weight loss

At the end of the day if you really want to lose weight it is not that difficult. You can follow one or more of the guidelines and over time your weight will reduce.

For example:-

Eat smaller portions
Eat more protein
Never eat carbohydrate without protein
Drink more water
Cut out any diet drinks or diet foods with additives and sweeteners
Increase your daily exercise
Eat low GI carbohydrates
Join a slimming club

Simple changes can make a difference to your dietary regime and help you to lose weight.

So if it is that easy why are so many people struggling to lose weight? There are many reasons for this including:-

Sluggish metabolism
Poor motivation
Negative thinking (this is one of the mail reasons)
Inability to give up diet food especially diet drinks
Don't exercise enough
Dislike weight loss support groups
Dislike high protein foods
Lack of willpower

It is a well known fact that some people just can't be helped. In all walks of life we all have to be prepared to take some responsibility for ourselves, and losing weight is no exception. Sensible, healthy eating starts in the home and it is vital that parents do what is necessary to change the trend of unhealthy eating patterns of their children. They need to take the time to find out how to lose weight. Even if they themselves don't eat a particularly healthy diet there is nothing to stop them from encouraging the children to eat sensibly. They may find that the habits rub off.

It can very difficult for some people to lose weight so surely it makes more sense to avoid becoming overweight in the first place.

Personally I feel that a lot of the blame lies with the weight loss industry. It is in their interest that we become overweight so that they can sell us the various dietary foods to help us to lose weight. If obesity didn't exist the weight loss industry would be out of work. This may be a cynical view but it may also be truer than we care to think

If you are overweight the chances are other members of your family will be overweight too, so take the responsibility to sort out your own weight problem and in so doing you will be helping other members of your family to do the same.
